Innovation Day 2024

Digitalization, AI, and Smart Decisions: Three essential tools for progress

Innovation Day 2024

During Innovation Day 2024, organized by Serviceplan Group in Munich, experts from the fields of economics, technology, and urban planning gathered to discuss an important question: Is the future positive? The answer was a resounding Yes! The future is full of opportunities—but it is up to us to seize them. Whether it's using AI to help people, leveraging data for smarter cities, or navigating economic changes with optimism, the possibilities are endless. Here are the key takeaways from the event:

1. From uncertainty to unpredictability
Adam Davidson, a well-known American business journalist and author, kicked off the event by sharing his perspective on the global economy. He explained how we have evolved from a world where survival—securing enough food, shelter, and resources—was the primary concern, to a world of abundance. However, this shift brings new challenges: unpredictability. Instead of fearing for survival, people are now afraid of losing what they already have.

Davidson highlighted that this unpredictability has fueled populism and economic anxiety worldwide. But there is hope. He envisions a "multipolar world" where economic power is more evenly distributed across countries. Sectors such as AI-driven manufacturing, biotechnology, and green energy offer exciting growth opportunities, especially in Europe. As technology reshapes the global economy, Davidson urged leaders to make smart decisions that benefit everyone.

2. Let AI help you, instead of overwhelming you
Cathy Hackl, a tech futurist and AI expert, offered a refreshing perspective on artificial intelligence. Rather than viewing AI as something that replaces jobs, Hackl sees it as a tool that can enhance human potential: "The future is about collaborating with machines, not competing against them." AI is already making a difference in sectors like healthcare and education. It helps doctors better understand their patients and tailor treatments. It also supports neurodiverse individuals during job interviews, making workplaces more inclusive.

Hackl describes her vision as "protopian"—neither overly optimistic nor pessimistic, but somewhere in between. She believes AI can democratize access to advanced tools for everyone, especially the younger generation. In a world where physical and digital realities merge, AI can stimulate creativity and collaboration, leading to a society where technology contributes positively.

3. Digitalization is about participation and democracy

Francesca Bria, an innovation economist and professor at UCL in London, emphasized how cities can become hubs of innovation, with citizens playing a central role. She advocates for turning technology and data into public goods, owned by citizens rather than corporations. "People want to actively participate in decision-making," said Bria.

As the former Chief Technology Officer of Barcelona, she led initiatives to tackle urban challenges such as mobility and air quality. She stressed: "Technology and data affect our daily lives. Digitalization isn’t about clicking or passing data to big companies; it’s about participation and democracy."

One of her projects, the superblocks in Barcelona, transformed neighborhoods by reducing car traffic and increasing green spaces. This demonstrates how technology can improve urban life and sustainability. Her approach is especially relevant for European cities looking to combine technology with democracy to create greener, smarter urban environments.

Building a positive future together

As Innovation Day 2024 showcased, the future is full of opportunities. By making smart, thoughtful decisions today, we can create a future that is not only positive but truly transformative.
