Munich, February 28, 2023 - The winners have been announced: At a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the Best Brands Awards, Germany's only survey-based brand award, the strongest brands of the year were honored. In addition to LEGO winning the award for “Best Overall Brand”, dm-drogerie markt received the award for “Best Brand in Corporate Sustainability”. The most successful brands of recent years were honored in the “Best of the Best Brands” category.
The winners are LEGO, Nivea and Bosch.
Around 550 guests from the worlds of business, trade and media, as well as numerous celebrities, attended the Best Brands Awards gala at the Bayerischer Hof in Munich. TV presenter Linda Zervakis hosted the evening.
After a welcome from Florian Haller, CEO of the Serviceplan Group, the evening began with a keynote speech by wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner, who inspired the guests with his fascinating success story. He spoke about courage, challenges, team spirit and self-confidence. To make his childhood dream come true, the Nuremberg native moved to Hawaii despite all odds against him. Today he holds the world record for surfing a wave of more than 26 meters.
Another highlight was the live interview of Christoph Amend, Editorial Director of ZEITmagazin and editor of “Welkunst”, DIE ZEIT, with Brazilian photographer and environmental activist Sebastião Salgado. As founder of the organization Instituto Terra, Salgado fights against environmental destruction. For years, he has put himself at the service of replanting and revitalizing his Brazilian homeland. His efforts have been successful, and thousands of hectares of rainforest have been restored.
JAN DELAY & DELAYDIES feat. DJ MAD entertained the audience at the end of the evening with a musical performance.
The evening gala was preceded by the Best Brands College during the day, with the theme “The best brands never stop moving: Successful brand management in times of change”. The daytime event, with lectures by top speakers, was again held live this year at the Serviceplan Group's Communication House. Speakers included author and visionary Christoph Keese, and the management team of Nadine Bartenschlager and Catherine Niebuhr, who share the position of Marketing Director of NIVEA Germany/Switzerland. Daniel Boschmann presented the school for the third time.

Best Brands is the only marketing award that measures the strength of a brand based on a representative empirical study conducted by GfK on the basis of two criteria: the actual economic success in the market - the so-called “market share” - and the “soul share”, the attractiveness of a brand as perceived by consumers.
In addition to the “Best Brands Overall”, which is repeated annually, brands in specific areas of life that were particularly important to consumers in the respective year have been analyzed since 2021. This year it was the “Best Brand in Corporate Sustainability”. To honor all those brands that have achieved this success in recent years, the Best Brands Award was also presented in the “Best of the Best Brands” category on the occasion of the 20th anniversary.
This year, LEGO won in the “Best Brand Overall” category. With an emotional strategy, collaborating with Hollywood studios such as Star Wars and Marvel, connecting the digital and real worlds (games) and creating holistic experiences in LEGOLAND- LEGO parks reaching target audiences of all generations. Of all the brands surveyed, LEGO enjoys the highest loyalty.
The “Best Brand in Corporate Sustainability” was awarded to dm-drogerie markt. The attitude, along with ecological, social and economic sustainability, is authentic for its consumers and can be experienced in all of the company's day-to-day operations: from the development of a completely CO2-neutral retail brand to plastic avoidance initiatives, to investments in employee satisfaction or Covid-19 testing and in-store vaccination offers. dm-drogerie markt is, in the eyes of consumers, a brand that delivers what it promises.
The special prize of the evening, the award in the “Best of the Best Brands” anniversary category, went to three winners: LEGO, Nivea and Bosch. The long-term success of the winning brands is based on the fact that they strike the right balance between tradition and innovative strength, emphasize powerful brand experiences and emotions, communicate brand values and invest in digitalization. As a result, they keep their finger on the pulse of the times and generate trust and credibility among consumers.
