Even the most advanced technology can‘t predict earthquakes
Challenge
Earthquakes have a devastating impact on communities and their livelihoods worldwide. Peru is a known seismic zone, due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. While the most sophisticated technology can’t predict earthquakes, scientific evidence shows that animals could.
Animals such as dogs behave abnormally before earthquakes, as their heightened senses can pick up on pre-seismic phenomena. Previous approaches to monitoring animals in the wild for earthquake forecasting have failed due to outdated and invasive technology. There is an urgent need for a simple method that prioritizes animal health.
Designed with the comfort of dogs in mind, the PetPace smart collar uses electrode-free non-invasive sensors. PetPace uses proprietary AI algorithms to analyze data and create comprehensive health reports.
Earthquake warnings powered by pet health data
Solution
By monitoring the behavior of pet dogs in Lima, Peru, Animal Alerts introduces a whole new approach to earthquake warnings. At the heart of the method is the PetPace smart health collar. Data such as pulse, temperature, respiration etc. are recorded in real-time. Based on these parameters and AI algorithms developed by the PetPace data science team, the dog’s stress level is determined. When multiple dogs in various locations within Lima show an anomalous increase in stress levels at the same time, this could be an indication of an impending earthquake.
For effective earthquake warning, Animal Alerts has secured media partnerships through Mediaplus Group and Reset Media for the broadcasting of alerts through geo-targeted messages on digital billboards, web, mobile, and radio. Through the support of various pet nutrition experts in Lima, retail promotions call for further volunteers to join the program. A website provides further information and ways for people to participate.
