Challenge

"Antisemitism? Long time ago."

80 years after the Holocaust, the number of antisemitic attacks in Germany has drastically increased from 7 to 29 registered cases daily in just a few months. However, large parts of society respond with lack of empathy and silence. Even when prominent members of the Jewish community drew parallels to the beginnings of National Socialism, there was no outcry of solidarity in politics, the media and society.

Our aim was to arouse compassion for those affected by antisemitism, without forcing Jews back into the role of victims, so that the whole of Germany stands in solidarity with its Jewish fellow citizens.

Solution

Creating real empathy with artificial intelligence

Together with the Central Council of Jews in Germany, we launched the #StopRepeatingStories campaign to combat antisemitism in our society.

This includes three online films that begin like typical testimonies of Holocaust survivors. However, the appearance and voice of the protagonists rejuvenate through AI over the video, causing viewers to shockingly realize: All of this is happening here and now.

For the implementation, we filmed actors in their twenties and used our AI tool "Gen AI", Retime and motion estimation to seamlessly age them to 90-year-old Holocaust survivors in a 200-frame sequence. The videos are accompanied by an atonal violin piece composed by Not A Machine.

The Central Council of Jews, whose community and influencers like Raul Krauthausen and Culcha Candela spread the films on all major social media channels, where we were able to achieve an increase in reach alone on LinkedIn and Instagram. A federal press conference brought the campaign additionally to all relevant mainstream media. Furthermore, an out-of-home installation at Hermannplatz provided additional awareness. We then used the gained attention to provide low-threshold recommendations for action against everyday antisemitism on our microsite stop-repeating-stories.org and via sharepics on the internet.

The clear message: It's time to act. Because never again is now.
